Norouz 1394

20. March 2015 marks the Spring equinox – day and night are of equal lengths, Spring officially begins.

IMG_8337It is also Persian New Year – Norouz.

IMG_8470

Families come together and indulge in (green herbed) rice, salad, overly sweet cookies and fish.

IMG_1867
This picture is from Christmas, but rice is just as special to us no matter what the holiday is. The green rice (sabzi polo) is on the bottom right.

IMG_8471

Norouz isn’t just about food; we have a table with seven “s” (haft siin, see first picture), with each object on the table symbolically representing something. I should’ve put a lot more vinegar on the table as it represents patience, and I could use more of that 😉

IMG_8451

Although I do love ultra-sweet desserts, Persian cookies are sometimes a bit heavy on the rose-water, so some Swiss macaroons also did the job 🙂

I love Norouz because I not only get to gorge on Tahdig, but also love spending time with family to celebrate the beginning of Spring, one of my favourite times of the year 🙂

Thinking out Loud Thursday

Happy Thursday friendly faces! I’ve been busy with University work so I thought it would be a perfect time for a random slew of thoughts!

Thinking-Out-Loud2

Thank you Amanda for hosting!

1. I found this picture a while back and am not sure if I posted it or not, but I am still very much in love with the adorable unicorn believing in us! 🙂

2. Persian food is where it’s at. We celebrated our New Year last week (happy 1394!) and while I’m still drafting that post, I thought I would entice you with a few delectable images of my favourite part of a Persian feast:

IMG_1893 IMG_1888 IMG_1891 IMG_1887IMG_8471

The crispy, crunchy, buttery crust that forms around the rice. Scrumptious! P.S My grandpa created a very special type of tahdig you can salivate over in the first few pictures; it contains all 3 kinds of crispy goodness: Bread, potato and rice!

3. I have finally received some of the photos from our LA trip! Will be blogging about the amazingness very very soon!

IMG_8256

4. Have you ever heard of a pugle? It’s a pug/beagle mix. I’m not sure whether I find them adorable or alieny… what do you think?

IMG_8448

5. Speaking of dogs, I took the munchkin to class a few weeks ago. Yeah.. not the best decision ever.

IMG_7970She sat rather still for the first few MINUTES but then decided to explore her surroundings – much to my fellow students entertainment. I however could not concentrate at all and ended up with little to no notes…

IMG_8389

There is another dog (the pug Kaiser) who accompanies his owner to class every day! I just received a video of him this morning and will share that with you soon 🙂

6. I managed to convince this guy to come to a big party with me at Aura a few weekends ago.

IMG_8331

Look how long my hair has gotten!

7. I recently fell in love with Shellack manicures.

IMG_8505 IMG_8510 IMG_8513This one is inspired by the great Jin Soon Choi.

8. Sushi. It’s why I am currently broke.

IMG_8378Currently saving up to eat more of those tempura rolls!! Also still going crazy over cheese! I want it on everything and anything. Especially eating it pure as fondue/raclette has been rather high on my list of to-dos lately. Weird, but I am not complaining 😉

9. IMG_8146What do you guys think of the Maple Macchiato? I personally find it too sweet with the added vanilla syrup so opt for a soya cappuccino with maple topping instead, as I do quite like the drizzle.

IMG_8131

10. And finally, I realise I haven’t been posting much about the gym, dance or anything sporty lately (let alone make-up…) but I swear I have been busy moving my bod (and applying beautiful colours)! I have taken up yoga again, try to make it to body pump at least once a week, recently performed in a whirling show

IMG_8190

and am also working hard on my flexibility.

IMG_8046

I’ll be sharing a few posts on my current obsessions as soon as I have gotten a good chunk of work done!

Until then, have a great week!

My Signature Thang

I have always adored women who appear to have their lives under control. It is a trait I hope to one day master.

MjAxMi02NDRkYjM5NzhiZmQ5OWU0

Sometimes I seem to associate this effortless elegance with Paris: Whenever I hear about graceful women my mind wanders to Café de Flore, and envision a naturally beautiful woman wearing pearls, a classic Chanel jacket, cigarette pants and kitten heels. I picture a mix of Audrey Tautou, Coco Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, and all of the French designer’s muses sitting at a table with red lipstick that doesn’t stain her glass filled with sparkling rosé, a plate of exquisite food before her, attracting the attention of any person to ever lay eyes on her.

I also imagine this lady to have the class and etiquette of a generous and timeless Iranian woman, with a brain and who knows very well who she wishes to be and that she is in control of her life.

I hope to one day be that kind of woman. Every day I meet people and see things that inspire me to become that envisioned woman sitting in Café de Flore. Whether it is my Aunt who naturally set a glass of water and a bowl of raw nuts by my bed just in case I was hungry, my mom who stayed true to her beloved skinny jeans and cowboy boots, owning her outfit because it is timeless, and who always reminded me that a woman should always be classy (yes, these comments were generally made when I was younger and begged to wear short shorts or mini skirts) and taught me the art of entertaining – Persian style, my other Auntie who inspires me with her positive outlook and love for the power of yoga, or my grandmother who looks more glamorous than Elizabeth Taylor and was even recently described as extremely elegant at the Sarah Lawrence Admitted Students Day that she accompanied me to.

109663-Nice+happiness+happy+quotes+thAs you see, I have a lot of dreams and plans as to who I wish to become and how I hope to be perceived. I have already started to plan certain things like to start writing a journal, to send thank you letters and hand written cards, to finally get my room organised and to make it look more grown up… and to finally have a signature look/character trait/inspiring way of life. A way people can remember me by. I long ago established my bouncy and talkative personality for which many people know and appreciate me, but sometimes I wish to recreate old ways… I want to be known for who I am and no longer for who I am meant to/trying to be, for sometimes, once my spunkiness was established, I felt I could no longer be any different and was even introduced as “that girl who I once told you about”. It puts you under a lot of pressure when you know you absolutely must be happy 24/7…

And that is why I started to express myself through dance, and let myself get inspired by the Evil Eye and dramatic eyeliner. I adore what the Hamsa Hand and the Evil Eye represent and choose to wear it every day. Wearing bracelets has always been a thing people have known me for, and now I have established it further by adding meaning to it. I also love to wear the Om symbol – it reminds me to stay calm and collected throughout the day (not always successful, but at least I’m trying ;))

And recently, the winged eyeliner has become my thing. Sometimes I keep it discreet, sometimes I tune it up with colours and mascara… but it is always there! And slowly I am creating my own look…

Thinking out Loud Thursday – Norouz

Thinking-Out-Loud

YAY! It’s Thursday and it’s the first day of SPRIIIIIING! Very excited for today’s Thinking out Loud. Thank You Amanda for hosting!

1. I jumped over fire on Tuesday for Charshambe Soori.

IMG_1523Charshambe Soori is during the night of the last Tuesday/ morning of the last Wednesday before Persian New Year (Norouz, also the beginning of Spring). It is an old Zoroastrian tradition. By jumping over fire, you purify yourself from all the terrible things of the past year and replace them with warmth, energy and light for the next year brought forth by the fire. While jumping you chant: “Sorkhi-ye to az man; Zardi-ye man az to (Give me your beautiful red colour; And take back my sickly pallor)” (source).

IMG_1517

This is the first time I partook in this beautiful tradition.

2. Today is Persian New Year, Norouz. Happy 1393 everyone! 😀

IMG_1516

For Norouz we set up a table called Haft Sin, seven S. The spread includes things that start with the letter “seen” of the Persian Alphabet. Some things always included are: Sib (apple) symbolizing beauty and health, Sabzeh (lentil sprouts) symbolizing rebirth, Samanu (sweet pudding) symbolizing affluence, Senjed (dried olive fruit) symbolizing love, Sir (garlic) symbolizing medicine, Somaq (sumac fruit) symbolizing the colour of sunrise, Serkeh (vinegar) symbolizing old age and patience.

We also add more things on to our table like a mirror, a book, painted eggs (symbolizing fertilization), an orange in water (symbolizing Earth in the Universe), old Persian coins and gold-fish.

We also cook a wonderful meal of Sabzi Polow (Rice with green herbs) and Mahi (fish). Dessert is always my favourite where we eat loads and loads of Persian treats 🙂 I’ll post a few pictures of tonight’s meal tomorrow!

This is my first Norouz without my parents… I’ll be celebrating tonight with my aunt and tomorrow with a wonderfully fun family friend! Nevertheless, their place will be empty (Persian Proverb)

3. I’ve got the cutest cousin

IMG_1518His name is Felix and he is turning 10 next week!

4. I’ve been in Munich for three weeks now! Time really flies! I’m hoping to stay longer if I can lengthen my internship! Fingers crossed 😀

5. IMG_1471I ordered myself a massive, double cappuccino on Saturday (hangover cure ;)) and it was so big that they served it in a bowl! I technically only wanted an extra shot of espresso and not two cappuccinos, but it was yummy! I couldn’t stop twitching until late into the night though! So perhaps never again?!

6. Now that I’ve been living in Munich, I only get to see my friends on the weekends, i.e barely any sleep and too much partying. I really need to detox again…

7. I have a new favourite nail polish.

IMG_1498It’s called Wonderland! Dior’s brushes are AMAZINGLY soft and the colours are great!

8. I’m unsuccessfully trying to follow the Whole30 Diet. I can’t get away from rice and chocolate, but I’ve been able to dump soy and milk products relatively well!

IMG_1451

9. I’ve started jogging! (But haven’t gone to the gym or to dance class in forever) 😦

10. It’s so beautiful and sunny! I’m so happy spring has sprung! 😀

Therapy for the Conceal-a-holic

You guys. I have a confession to make. Reality TV => OBSESSION ALERT!

Yes, you may roll your eyes and think I’m mad, but I honestly find the Kardashians an amusing bunch of people. Also, have you watched Shahs of Sunset? Oh Em Gee you guys, I can’t even. Persians in Tehrangeles – I’m hooked!

Pancakes. I’ve been having a weird craving for pancakes lately. It all started when I made pancakes for dinner on Sunday. I hadn’t eaten pancakes in forever, and now, I can’t seem to get enough.

Mr. Lash BoosterI can’t even handle the beauty, nor the effect it will have on my lashes. Need. This.

I’ve gone Cashew CrazyMy new years resolutions have not been going very well food wise, and I really hope to pull off some (partially) raw (mainly) vegan action ASAP. Especially now that I’m noticing problems when eating wheat…

Alexa Chung’s Cat Eye – Makes me and my makeup seem extremely trendy 😉

I’m loving this new blog I discovered today! Hip and trendy outfits that make me super jealous!

Please someone, make this for me!

Oh and I can’t get enough of Peanut Butter Lindor Kugeln. Been eating them nightly since the New Year… too bad I can’t buy them here, in Zurich, in Switzerland, where they originally come from! I’ve even been to the factory and everything…
