Thinking out Loud Thursday: Random Ramblings

I recently skyped with my beautiful Grandmother and noticed how radiant she looked  (seriously Grandma, you looked great 🙂 ). Being the beauty-crazed person that I am, I naturally asked her what she does, what product she uses and how she cares for her basically wrinkle-free skin. I just had to know her secret.. I didn’t want to just rely on “good genes” to keep me looking young for the rest of my life. I was always told you can never start caring for your skin too soon (as I mentioned here) and what could be better than hearing wise words from Grandma?

Well, I didn’t really get the answer to eternal youth that I had expected…

Pretty picture in Lindau to break the paragraphs ;)

Pretty picture in Lindau to break the paragraphs 😉

Her beauty secret wasn’t a particular product.. nor was it a treatment… no, dear Granny’s mysterious secret was actual very natural…

BUTTER and SLEEP

You can imagine how I looked at her through the poorly megapixeled camera resolution

IMG_1680

Yup.. I was astounded.

Butter. And no, she doesn’t smear it on her face, she includes it in her diet.

I still can’t get over it. It’s too simple to be true…

Her comment got me thinking: If her secret was enough sleep and enough butter, why am I continuously in search for perfect skin care. Am I going about this all wrong?

Day in, day out I am scouting Sephora, department stores and magazines to find the next best thing. I wrote about finishing my eye cream and searching for another, preemptive replacement, possibly wasted spent plenty of my allowance and free time … all in fear of one day looking old.

I then realized, she actually had a point. There has long been a trend to suck fat from unwanted areas and placing it into the face, like in the cheeks, to make the patient look younger. A round, rosy face used to be the ultimate sign of youth and health after all…before cheekbones and size zero became the next big thing…

Thus butter, which basically is fat, tends to have a plushing effect on skin: the more fat the more wrinkle free. Ergo, only skinny people need anti-aging skin care? Or more fat will make you look younger? If that were true I could spend more time resting than at the gym and waaaaay less money spent on products 😉 Oh and I could enjoy much much more of this good stuff:

IMG_1154

I’ve interpreted “butter” as my FAVOURITE nut butter – hey it’s all healthy fat, and should also lead to a young complexion right?

What do you think?

What I ate Wednesday – Office Food

I actually purposefully took pictures of my meals today so that I could share them with you. Thank you Jenn for hosting 🙂

Breakfast

IMG_0464

Don’t knock it until you try it! Apple/banana sauce is actually quite nice… I normally add chia seeds, but forgot to take it home with me to let the chia soak up the juice. Instead, I ate 2 dark chocolate covered rice waffles an hour or so later (I blame my Auntie for getting me on the rice waffle train.. she keeps 5 packs of them at a time in the kitchen and her sons and husband devour them within minutes!)

Great as a “sitting at desk” breakfast

Lunch

Lunch at the office is either Thai, Indian or Greek take-away, or a salad that we cut up ourselves. One of my co-workers actually started a salad tradition of cucumber, feta, tomato and avocado, which almost everyone makes when we decide to not order take-away. I was in the mood for kidney beans today and wanted a bit of protein after my carby breakfast, so I made a mix of cherry tomatoes, mini cucumbers, carrots and lettuce, added in half a can of beans and topped it all off with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and crème de balsamico. It was deeeeeelicious and will definitely be making a reappearance, maybe with some goat’s cheese on top? Mhhhhm

I had to rush to a PR meeting right after my (extremely short) lunch break… and on my way back I passed my favorite café… naturally I had to get a Matcha latte with soya milk. I’m such a creature of habit… -> have extra time, buy beauty product, walk past café, get a matcha. I think I will need to ban lattes soon too…

Later on between 16.30 and 18.00 I had the rest of my kidney beans (weird snack, I know, but I really was craving them still), a carrot and two packets of blueberries. I snacked on the blueberries while reading the new MADAME 🙂

As a pre-workout snack/ part of dinner I ate a Quest bar I found in my suitcase! I was soooo happy to find it as I thought I had eaten my last one yesterday! It is part of dinner since I haven’t managed to run to the store yet between moving, trying to keep a work-out schedule and being in the office.

Dinner

IMG_1111

Quest bars and spoonfuls of peanut butter are my go to meals in the (late) evenings after the gym, when I have nothing else to eat/feel very uninspired (nutritionist mom: need some tips please!) I also love sautéed spinach and tofu in coconut milk or some quinoa (if I meal-prepped and have some leftover…). All with peanut butter 😉

Today I ate two tablespoons of PB with 3 raw carrots 🙂

So that’s my typical (healthy) work day! I’ll be sure to fill you in on one of our take-away days too! And see: Fashion people do eat 🙂

Obsession Alert: Code Red!

You guys. It is murder working at a magazine. I am SURROUNDED by all the products I want to try and I can’t do more than just test out a little on my hand… so sad 😦

I’ve resorted to drowning my sorrows in spoonfuls of peanut butter and endless Sephora “loves”. Seriously, it is an issue. I just bought a 500 g jar two days ago and it is already half empty.

Whoops

I tend to spoon feed myself more upon utter excitement, like when I found this eye cream. If only it weren’t so expensive…. and nut butter so calorific…

Whoops again

Also, I NEED this in my life. It would a) be “parfait” and b) my first Chanel makeup purchase… you have to start somewhere… the only thing is I can’t quite convince myself to spend the money on it because the colour is outrageously similar to this. But it’s Chanel so it should be ok.. right?

Have you guys watched Girl Code? It used to be on at the gym at SLC, and I found it ridiculous then – but after finding some relatively funny gifs and memes on Pinterest (that are sadly very accurate and applicable to me) I thought I would actually watch an episode without mute turned on. Now I am officially hooked. Goodbye social life… oh wait that’s gone anyways this weekend as I decided to stay here and know NOONE! I do have my eye on a cute barista though…..

Speaking of working out: I found an amazing gym here! I can’t wait to train more frequently…

IMG_1687

Oh I also wouldn’t mind a Lancôme lipstick or two… don’t blame me, blame Instagram like I do

Also, anyone want to take me to Paris sometime soon?

IMG_0138

IMG_0216

Because Maison Guerlain has opened the mothership of all beauty heavens. It’s an oasis full of everything from makeup to an in-house spa to a restaurant… It’s number 68 – I can’t believe I was so close last time!

IMG_0139

That was outside Louis Vuitton, but I would have rather seen Guerlain

my problems people… seriously…;)

And can someone find me this lock?

8412755091_2d308d5555_z

It’s currently my background on my phone!

Oh and on a completely non beauty/dance note, I love this song and this one, and this one

Actually maybe it is a slight dance note, as I can feel choreography-inspiration coming my way. You know I always seem to dance more after going to the gym? Weird…

Question of the day

What things are making your heart beat faster lately?

What I ate Wednesday

Finally I remembered to take pictures of my meals, so now it’s time for a What I ate Wednesday PARTYYY 🙂

Thanks Jenn for hosting!

Breakfast:

IMG_1722

Large Matcha Latte with soy milk.

YUMM!

…and a punnet of blueberries at my desk. I also drank a Vita Coco throughout the morning. Those things are goooood.

Superfood/Antioxidant breakfast: check!

Lunch:

IMG_1645

A MASSIVE salad quite similar to this one (I forgot to take a picture today…after all, so this is recycled 😦 )

Mine at lunch had no goat’s cheese and no broccoli, but it did have avocado, peas, red peppers, cherry tomatoes, baby cucumber and loads of lettuce 🙂

Snack:

A pack of strawberries

Dinner:

IMG_1644

Coconut Quinoa (recipe coming soon!)

IMG_0314

Stir fry tofu and vegetables (spinach and broccoli) with tempeh and tomato sauce (all leftovers)

Dessert:

IMG_0316

Peanut butter with applesauce, linseeds and a Raw Chocolate bar on the side.

Chocolate is always a good idea. Especially raw chocolate with cherry and chill (Lovechock). Especially at night when that craving hits…

That’s all for now folks 🙂

Have a great evening.

I made cookies! :)

Life – it has recently taken over in the kind of way that leaves you longing for your bed where you could curl up and watch Will and Grace reruns. Things have been all over the place lately, both good and bad, and it was hard to find time to sit down and type…

For example, my little cuddly Bala had to be operated on last Thursday. She wasn’t feeling well after one of our walks and after a trip to the vet, I had realised she had eaten a lot of wood.. not good.

IMG_1405Thankfully she is doing a lot better.

With her at the hospital, I’ve been spending a lot of time at home with the other munchkin so that she wouldn’t get lonely. It’s weird having only one dog at home and I find myself including her in a lot more of my activities; we watch TV shows together, we eat our meals together and she even sat in the kitchen while I was baking cookies! 🙂

IMG_1400I followed this recipe, not adding the raspberries and using peanut butter, and they turned out super healthy and super yummy!

IMG_1402Another thing keeping me busy were my driving lessons!

IMG_0987..which came to an end yesterday!

I PASSED MY TEST 🙂

And the last thing keeping me away from blogging was trying to figure out what I will be studying this September. I’ve been reading descriptions, checking lecture times and gazing far into my soul to figure out what it is I really want to do… it’s tough work!

Things will hopefully return back to normal soon. I have a lot of plans for the blog and can’t wait to share them with you!

Hope you are having a great Tuesday!

Earl Grey Oats Variation

Oatmeal.

IMG_1088Definitely a favourite food. It’s fast and easy to prepare, requires only one pot and is more or less fool-proof (just always keep an eye on the boiling milk!)

IMG_1091Nut Butter. Also a favourite. No wonder I always pair the two.

IMG_1090Cashew nut butter. The absolute favourite of them all. I’ve written about adding it into my oatmeal more than enough times to prove that it is a delicious combination.

IMG_1088

To keep things interesting, I subbed millet flakes for the rolled oats. If I dare say so myself, I believe the Earl Grey Tea + Cashew Nut Butter combo is even more scrumptious this way. 🙂

You can find the recipe here, just swap millet flakes for the oats.

Peanut Butter Oatmeal Fail and Earl Grey Oats Win

A few months ago I shared with you some of my favourite overnight oats recipes. My two most loved ones were Peanut Butter Oats and Earl Grey Oats. I tried recreating them here with steel-cut oats, but failed miserably as the soaking period is longer than for quick oats and I ended up needing to chew much more than was enjoyable. Not letting my disappointment get to me, I decided to get up early instead and cook up some oatmeal in the morning.

IMG_0625

My first breakfast oatmeal attempt were my Fudge Oats, and I fell in love with the fluffy yet creaminess that the steel-cut oats attained. That being said, you can imagine how excited I was for my next steel-cut-oat experience!

IMG_0635In the form of Peanut Butter Oats.

IMG_0628

IMG_0638

IMG_0651The texture was good, but I should not have added PB 2 to the mix at the end, as it gave off a weird artificial aftertaste.

IMG_0649The texture and creaminess were great though, so I decided to eat half before dance and doctor the rest up later before going to the gym.

This “doctoring up” came in the form of almond butter with chia seeds, cocoa powder and more chocolate chips.

IMG_0652The result: brownie batter oats without the nasty after taste! Absolute win.

IMG_0655It became very sticky due to the added almond butter and also super chocolatey with the cocoa. Needless to say, I enjoyed every last bite and did not crave any unhealthy cookies or cake afterwards!

IMG_0667My next attempt at a stove-top version of my overnight oats was more successful than the PB2 drama as I stayed as close to my original recipe as possible, with only the slightest tweak: a tablespoon of honey drizzled on top.

IMG_0766

IMG_0768These earl grey oats were perfect. I was surprised that steeping the tea bag in the boiling coconut milk actually worked! It was scrumptiously delicious!
