Pump, pump, pump it UUUUUP

Yellow. How are you today? The weather in Munich is miserable with a capital EHM. Where is the gorgeous Summer we’ve long been waiting for? Talk about Summertime Sadness, people…

“The Queen is (most likely) not amused”

The only thing keeping me going during this dreary, rainy day is knowing that I will be going to my favourite BodyPump class this evening. I mean, not even tofu curry (and rice) made me happy – the HORROR! (I am now also craving chocolate.. carbo-loading…. I guess? )

Ever since slowly seeing some results in terms of strength and how my clothes fit (no big differences yet but slowly seeing some changes), I’ve been better with a) my food choices (about 80% of the time, especially when not in Munich) and b) being disciplined and powerful at the gym. BodyPump is the class I try to never, ever miss. I aim to go 2-3 times per week, definitely on Tuesdays and Sundays, and if I can also Monday or Friday. It really depends on where I am and what my week looks like (and how much my legs hurt from squatting too low with too much weight 😉 ). Of course I could just do my own weight training, but I try to do those only once a week to work on technique.. I tend to not push my self as much in solo training sessions.

It’s funny really. I was at a stretch class a few weeks ago working on my splits, when the instructor put my feet up on blocks and said: Work harder. She helped by pushing me down lightly… the pain was atrocious but all I could do was smile.. it’s like the 8th World Wonder or something..what is wrong with me? I guess I smile through pain? Is that… good? Hmm…

Fun fact: my name means happiness (sort of) and yesterday I learned that my last name could be some sort of derivative of people dancing with scarves. Interesting how names can unconsciously describe people…

Oh and guess what: I have learned to embrace my round behind: It helps me squat 16 kg and is the perfect “accessory” on the dance floor. If that isn’t reason enough to love it, I wouldn’t know what is. My name on Instagram isn’t anoushaykin_it for nothing 😉

Sidenote: Does dancing like a mad-woman at a club count as a workout? I think it should… Oh and did you know that Vodka is vegan (love this by the way – I want the shirt!)

I’ve managed to go:

  • Right after coming back from my vacation
  • after sleeping 3 hours and partying all night
  • with only 5 minutes to spare and missing the warmup

…now that is dedication

And I have not just fallen in love with BodyPump.. I absolutely adore all of Les Mills’ repertoire. For cardio I go to Step, for 6-pack abs I go to CX-works, for HIIT I hope to go to Grits (it hasn’t been released here yet)… I’ve even been to their yoga/tai chi/pilates class a few times.

I am HOOKED.. and even thinking about training to be an instructor. You know while also wanting to take up CrossFit, go back to yoga, be a choreographer, finish my BA, write a book….. – yeah we’ve discussed that.

Thinking out Loud Thursday: Random Ramblings

I recently skyped with my beautiful Grandmother and noticed how radiant she looked  (seriously Grandma, you looked great 🙂 ). Being the beauty-crazed person that I am, I naturally asked her what she does, what product she uses and how she cares for her basically wrinkle-free skin. I just had to know her secret.. I didn’t want to just rely on “good genes” to keep me looking young for the rest of my life. I was always told you can never start caring for your skin too soon (as I mentioned here) and what could be better than hearing wise words from Grandma?

Well, I didn’t really get the answer to eternal youth that I had expected…

Her beauty secret wasn’t a particular product.. nor was it a treatment… no, dear Granny’s mysterious secret was actual very natural…

BUTTER and SLEEP

You can imagine how I looked at her through the poorly megapixeled camera resolution

Yup.. I was astounded.

Butter. And no, she doesn’t smear it on her face, she includes it in her diet.

I still can’t get over it. It’s too simple to be true…

Her comment got me thinking: If her secret was enough sleep and enough butter, why am I continuously in search for perfect skin care. Am I going about this all wrong?

Day in, day out I am scouting Sephora, department stores and magazines to find the next best thing. I wrote about finishing my eye cream and searching for another, preemptive replacement, possibly wasted spent plenty of my allowance and free time … all in fear of one day looking old.

I then realized, she actually had a point. There has long been a trend to suck fat from unwanted areas and placing it into the face, like in the cheeks, to make the patient look younger. A round, rosy face used to be the ultimate sign of youth and health after all…before cheekbones and size zero became the next big thing…

Thus butter, which basically is fat, tends to have a plushing effect on skin: the more fat the more wrinkle free. Ergo, only skinny people need anti-aging skin care? Or more fat will make you look younger? If that were true I could spend more time resting than at the gym and waaaaay less money spent on products 😉 Oh and I could enjoy much much more of this good stuff:

I’ve interpreted “butter” as my FAVOURITE nut butter – hey it’s all healthy fat, and should also lead to a young complexion right?

What I ate Wednesday

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these. Today you get to see how I eat during a (Persian Holiday) work day, with little sports, plenty of good intentions (I’ve been trying to follow a whole food, low dairy diet) and a few cravings… 😉 Thank you Jenn for hosting!

I went for a short jog with my Aunt this morning and completed a short all body circuit afterwards. Then I jumped into the shower and ran to work (figuratively..my legs are still getting accustomed to jogging frequently as I was always a dancer, not a runner).

As soon as I got to work I wished I had packed something protein-y.. All I had with me was a Quest bar that I didn’t feel like eating and some raw carrots and clementines. Not living in my own home really dampens my passion for cooking, which is a major bummer when all you want to eat is an egg white omelette.

Breakfast: Ended up being 4 clementines and 2 raw carrots, but I was craving an egg white omelette and a chai tea latte

Lunch: Salad from City Salad with egg, kidney beans, chickpeas, raw mushroom slices, cucumbers and shredded carrots. Good but not satisfying enough.. there wasn’t enough dressing and I need salads to be drenched with vinaigrette.. and I was still craving a chai tea latte 😦

Snack: A few yoghurt covered cashews and a totally delicious yet extremely unhealthy chocolate Powerbar that tastes like chocolate mousse in bar form and finally satiated my cravings. I try to reduce my sugar and processed food intake but sometimes, when on the go, you have to make do with what you can get and this definitely hit the spot!

IMG_1514Dinner: It was a Persian Holiday (stay tuned for more) so I had a big bowl of Ash reshteh, some dried fruits and nuts and later on an apple 🙂

I made cookies! :)

Life – it has recently taken over in the kind of way that leaves you longing for your bed where you could curl up and watch Will and Grace reruns. Things have been all over the place lately, both good and bad, and it was hard to find time to sit down and type…

For example, my little cuddly Bala had to be operated on last Thursday. She wasn’t feeling well after one of our walks and after a trip to the vet, I had realised she had eaten a lot of wood.. not good.

IMG_1405Thankfully she is doing a lot better.

With her at the hospital, I’ve been spending a lot of time at home with the other munchkin so that she wouldn’t get lonely. It’s weird having only one dog at home and I find myself including her in a lot more of my activities; we watch TV shows together, we eat our meals together and she even sat in the kitchen while I was baking cookies! 🙂

IMG_1400I followed this recipe, not adding the raspberries and using peanut butter, and they turned out super healthy and super yummy!

And the last thing keeping me away from blogging was trying to figure out what I will be studying this September. I’ve been reading descriptions, checking lecture times and gazing far into my soul to figure out what it is I really want to do… it’s tough work!

Things will hopefully return back to normal soon. I have a lot of plans for the blog and can’t wait to share them with you!

Avocado Protein Smoothie

I ate half an avocado with dinner last night. I never manage to eat a whole one, and the other half always gets left somewhere in the kitchen, slowly withering away, browning slightly on the outside – alone, unwanted, uneaten…

I was feeling sorry for this avocado, all by its lonesome, not being eaten on my high protein day. I saw it at breakfast, while eating my egg white and cottage cheese omelette, I looked over to it while putting away the dishes, and I began to crave it while making myself tea. My heart breaking in two I didn’t know what to do… technically I was trying to follow Pierre Dukan’s diet and just eat pure protein for a full day, but I just couldn’t let the poor half go to waste – so I did what any foodie would do…

…I put it in a smoothie.

This way my mind remained at ease. I was still able to log a high protein content, but since I was adding fruit into my smoothie I had already broken the “pure protein rule” anyways; adding avocado wouldn’t have changed that so win/win.

IMG_1229I had read about adding avocado into things all over the blogosphere, but hadn’t mustered enough courage to ever try it. The lonely avocado half was a sign that it was meant to be… it was meant to finally happen.. and it was deliciously worth it!

IMG_1230Now that I’ve finally given the “add avocado for creaminess” thing a whirl, and couldn’t even taste it, I’m now ready to add it into things like fudge cake and chocolate mousse.. I’m on a roll 😉

(serves 1)

Ingredients

  • 1/2 avocado
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 1 cup frozen raspberries
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (I used Sun Warrior)
  • 1/2 cup milk of choice
  • dash of cocoa powder

Directions

  1. Put everything into a blender
  2. blend
  3. enjoy!

  • 1 frozen banana
  • 1 serving raw, vegan protein powder (I used Sun Warrior Vanilla)
  • 1/2 cup of milk of your choice
  • 2 tablespoons of ground flax seeds
  • dash of cinnamon
  • dash of vanilla extract
  1. Put all ingredients in a blender
  2. blend
  3. enjoy

Thanksgiving Saturday etc

Food. Tis the season to be round and jolly. I don’t know about you, but because I eat a diet of mainly fruit and vegetables, portion control has never been one of my strong points. Now while I have been told that my over-consumption of grapes, berries and cucumbers is hereditary, there is no sign in my DNA that speaks for a frequent indulgence in things my body does not function well on, i.e. any normal kind of food other people are lucky enough to be able to eat daily, but if I eat them one time too many I generally turn into one of the snowballs depicted above. Being in college has definitely had this “snowball effect” on me (use of amazing figurative term intended 😉 ). Food is available EVERYWHERE in this consumerism-run country, and it is hard to stick to my finally perfected, 80 % raw diet. The lack of fresh produce at my school has made me fine tune my diet in ways that end up in me consuming way too many cans of nuts, cups of tofu and rice in search for healthy alternatives to what is offered here. My choices are not technically unhealthy, but they do begin to leave you slightly more “bulky” when you only ate them for one or two of your meals in the day, like I was used to, and not depended on them completely!

That’s why I decided to do a short cleanse while back at home, eating like I used to again!

I felt AMAZING after revamping my nutrition (says she munching on a few whole grain tortilla chips, while waiting for a sushi delivery….) I will definitely go back to it when I go back home, as a diet lacking in fresh produce and super foods has a terrible effect on my mood, my energy and my general well-being.

At this point in my life, I’m happy to finally have figured out what foods I function best on! Too bad I’m not always able to remember that when wooed by things like double chocolate chip cookie cheesecake bites, greasy burritos and the works. “I’ll start again tomorrow…” is the way I generally end my day, stomach bloated, feeling way too tired and wanting to sleep forever. Oh, when will I learn from my mistakes..

Anyhoo, back to Saturday. I was continuing my cleanse, and started off my morning with a little pilates with my father.

IMG_0803This was taken post workout. I was amazed my how fit my dad was.. the exercises were tough and left me in a pool of sweat, despite my daily dance classes and 5 x a week workouts!

After pilates I had made myself lunch and went back to studying. Then, around 5, this wonderful, bestest girl showed up
