Funky Friday – HipHop Minus the Swag

You know how when you claim to have been dancing HipHop since you were seven, people assume you are really good at it? Well, there came a time where I started to believe that I was good at it myself too…

Jazz Hands!

Jazz Hands!

I always stood at the front left. In performances I was placed centre stage. Mothers walked up to me and complimented my skills. Little kids stared in awe. These few affirmations led me to believe a career in dance could be quite probable. My dream of dancing for Michael Jackson constantly grew. When that was no longer possible I imagined myself the owner of a world-renowned dance company..

Dance

Dance

When I left for New York, I left knowing I was at my best. Nothing could stop me – not even pure contemporary lessons and no more hiphop. I would return just as much a star!

I hadn’t danced hiphop since before my departure, in July.

My perception of my talents shattered this past Monday.

IMG_0591Yes, I might have mastered the hiphop style of that specific choreographer; but that’s also the only style I know. On Monday I attempted to try a new style, a new teacher, a new studio. Full of spunk, believing in myself, knowing I’m actually not bad, I entered the room in my Sarah Lawrence Tank and cute polka dot pants.

Never did it dawn on me that I actually might suck at other kinds of hiphop…

The warm up was fine, full of basic movements I was already familiar with: There was the wave, isolations, second position pliés – the works. I was feeling good, confident, myself. Contemporary and jazz are all great and all, but hiphop was the only dance I ever really felt comfortable in and it was amazing to finally be back at it…until we got to the choreography, aka my predestined meltdown.

DANCE!

DANCE!

Some would say, it’s a new teacher, so I need to get used to his way of teaching before I can really get in to it. Agreed, that is important. But in this case specifically, I don’t think my movement mess-ups were due to the choreographer merely being a new acquaintance. No, I think my mishaps were more along the lines of “I have lost my swag, my coolness, my inner gangster, my hiphop-y-ness”… it wasn’t a good day.

I realised, by never ever testing the waters elsewhere, I had just plunged head first into a battle I could not win. 13 Years of only one hiphop style is a biggie. You don’t mess with that. And I did. Oops.

Back stretch..

Back stretch..

This never occurred to me while learning ballet, dancing jazz or rolling around in modern. There I always seemed to come to terms with the fact that “I was better at hiphop, I’m only here to have fun and not be amazing, I have more experience in hiphop etc etc”. I also always went to different teachers and somehow managed to cope. Knowing my “true calling” was actually more urban-based helped me keep my head up when I was stuck doing one pirouette in ballet while the rest was twirling 3. Monday changed everything. Monday told me that maybe I should rethink things…

I found myself suddenly feeling better in jazz.

Is a more classical path my actual calling after all? Maybe. But I will give myself one more chance and will brave the hiphop class once more, only this time I’m making sure to “swag myself out” in baggy pants, Adidas trainers and a gold chain necklace… superficial hiphop style might help me out a little 😉

Thinking Out Loud Thursday

It’s been one of those weeks… blogging seemed like a chore and I just wanted to hide away in my bed and travel back in time a few years to when I was a little girl and had no troubles or cares in the world.. but alas, I’ve had to put my big girl pants on, and am back full of energy for every task that lies ahead!Thinking-Out-Loud

1.  I ate manchego cheesecake with my grandparents

IMG_1321

2. I’ve finally returned to where I belong; I now live at the dance studio again. I went to my first class last Friday and then went again Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday! Tonight I’m planning on going to the gym (where I haven’t been in a while either….) and tomorrow will hopefully get to a body pump class! Life is good

IMG_1309

3. Speaking of dance… this is how I bow and run off stage after dancing like a Turkey (long story short, I performed the Tale of the Turkey Prince at SLC and have finally received the video!)

4. I filmed my dog making weird noises in her sleep. The funniest part is at the end where her sister looks at her like she has gone crazy and she then realises she is being filmed and stares in to the camera… priceless.

..also I have some pictures of them all comfy in their sleep.

5. I have FINALLY used my Marc Jacobs Nail Polish; Le Charme.

6. Leaving for America didn’t just leave a dent in my dance frequenting schedule, it also left me an irregular at my favourite Thai Restaurant in Zürich. I hadn’t been since returning home and have gone three times in this last week… the best part of going again wasn’t the food (though it was just as amazing) it was seeing how happy the staff at the restaurant were to see me! Everyone asked how I was, told me how they missed me and kept offering me free glasses of pink champagne and dessert! I guess it really does pay off to be a regular for over 14 years… 🙂

7. From all my Starbucks visits, you might deduced that I’ve gone matcha crazy. My dad picked up on that and found me Matcha Chocolate! Yumm!

IMG_1130

I’ve also gone as far as adding it into my smoothies too (matcha powder, not chocolate 😉 )

IMG_1312

8. I sometimes go to Pilates with my dad! The last time I went, this little doggy wanted to join in on the fun too! He is so cute, I can’t stop taking pictures! So now I will be raving about 3 dogs in my blog posts… oh the horror.

Salted Chocolate Raspberry Brownie Oatmeal

You guys…

Remember that one time I went totally crazy and put avocado in to my smoothie? Well…

Photo on 24-01-14 at 15.39

Oops I did it again… only this time I put it into Oatmeal!

Photo on 24-01-14 at 15.52 #2I got the inspiration for this rad oatmeal from none other than the Oatmeal Artist herself. Her version is baked, but that didn’t stop me from using similar ingredients and cooking them in a pot!

Photo on 24-01-14 at 15.51I’ve always loved the combination of nut butter and raspberry. I’ve also always loved chocolate and raspberry. Did you know that when you combine cocoa with almond butter it tastes sort of like a brownie? And then you throw some raspberry jam in there and you get an oatmeal so spectacular that it reminds you of these brownies I made a few years ago for Valentine’s day…

Speaking of which, I might just have to make those again this year and eat the whole pan myself while watching Bridget Jones (#foreveralone)

Photo on 24-01-14 at 15.39 #3Anyhoo, these oats were great! I ate them before going to Barre à Terre and Jazz. That’s right, I went back to dance! It’s been a month since I’ve danced, and a few months since I’ve gone to my favourite studio, but the old me is back! I’ve gone to dance a couple of times since last Friday and am hooked again… sadly however, I’ve been neglecting the gym…

Stay tuned for this weeks Funky Friday where I will be giving a recap 🙂

Manicure Monday: Disco Biscuit

IMG_1192Happy Monday everyone!

IMG_1195How was your weekend? Mine was full of pilates, Persian food and pancakes (ha! unintended alliteration for the win 🙂 )

IMG_1193Let me introduce to you, a Butter London Nail Polish that I received for my 20th birthday!

IMG_1203It’s a beautiful coral-ish red with sparkles. Loads and loads of sparkles.

IMG_1210This nail polish required two coats, otherwise it looked a bit too skimpy.

IMG_1207Let me just mention how amazing my friend is for a) reading my blog, b) remembering that I ADORE cute nail polish names and c) finds me a nail polish called Disco Biscuit for my birthday, a night where I, 1) of course was going to go out to a club, and 2) hopefully would get to eat loads of biscuits and other goodies. 🙂 perfection!

IMG_1203Did you guys know that in India they don’t say cookie, but they say biscuit? Even to chocolate chip cookies? I made this fun little discovery during my first month at SLC. It was one of the first times I had eaten a soft-baked chocolate chip cookies at the cafeteria, after seeing a group of soccer guys literally sneak behind the counter to the oven and stuff a bunch of cookies in their pockets! Naturally I thought I had to try them… and since they were so good I also wanted to start hoarding them! I mention this to my friends (many of which are from India), and my one friend gets the spectacular idea to also sneak behind the counter and grab AN ENTIRE TRAY OF “BISCUITS”! He rushes over to me, expecting me to grab all the cookies and run, but I’m stuck, frozen in awe, laughing hysterically at what he had just done! Then he started shouting: “grab the biscuits Anoushé, hurry hurry!” The way he said “biscuit” sent me into another round of hysterics.. that was the night we all became friends, and I swore I would convert to saying biscuit over cookie. (I also say Shoyu instead of soy sauce now, but that’s another, albeit similar, story..:) ).

IMG_1206This nail polish will now forever remind me of that one, biscuit-full night 🙂

Thinking Out Loud Thursday 2

I ran out of my favourite foundation today and lost my inspiration to blog about my makeup selections for Beauty to the Pointe.. so what to do when you don’t know what to write about? Join a linkup as fun as this one! Thank you Amanda for hosting!

Thinking-Out-Loud1. My work out goals for 2014 started off badly, but now that I decided to make myself a fixed schedule, things have been more “smooth sailing”. I made it to the gym twice this week and will be going again tomorrow. Today was a much-needed rest day!

IMG_1268

IMG_12532. …and what do you do on a rest day? You eat cupcakes…because that’s how it is meant to work, right? Eat clean only while training mean… or something like that 😉

IMG_1270

3. I have found a really nice nail polish remover, and while things like Liquid Sand and Glitter are still really hard to remove, it leaves my fingers extremely soft.

IMG_1256

I can’t wait to try other Josie Maran products!

IMG_1257

4. The Matcha Green Tea Latte has made a return twice since last week… there is no hope! 😉

IMG_1258

IMG_1266

5. I have the cutest dogs in the whole entire universe. Yes, I may have mentioned this before, but I’ve been hanging out with them a lot lately and they never fail to be CUTE! Check my phone – all recent pictures are of them (or of food!)

IMG_1260

They both hug the blanket! SO CUTE!

Checking up on me… 🙂

6. I am in LOVE with this tea from Teavana. It is called Choco Caramel Sea Salt. Why don’t they have a store here?!

IMG_12647. I’ve changed my nail polish three times this week. That means my next three Manicure Monday posts are already written and ready! Now that’s what we call well prepared 😉

8. IMG_0968I bought one of these in the States because everyone else was using them too. I have to say, I like it, but want to try and make my own as well!

9.IMG_0930Class at Sarah Lawrence starts soon again and it will be really weird not going back. I really miss my friends back in New York and while I know that it is the right thing for me to stay here, I will be missing staying up late with a group of friends talking and meeting up with everyone at lunch. I’m glad though that I mainly miss the social aspect, because that is possible to keep up from a different country!

10. Our Christmas decorations are going back into the cellar tomorrow. I don’t know how I feel about that… the Holidays are officially over…

Therapy for the Conceal-a-holic

You guys. I have a confession to make. Reality TV => OBSESSION ALERT!

Yes, you may roll your eyes and think I’m mad, but I honestly find the Kardashians an amusing bunch of people. Also, have you watched Shahs of Sunset? Oh Em Gee you guys, I can’t even. Persians in Tehrangeles – I’m hooked!

Pancakes. I’ve been having a weird craving for pancakes lately. It all started when I made pancakes for dinner on Sunday. I hadn’t eaten pancakes in forever, and now, I can’t seem to get enough.

Mr. Lash BoosterI can’t even handle the beauty, nor the effect it will have on my lashes. Need. This.

I’ve gone Cashew CrazyMy new years resolutions have not been going very well food wise, and I really hope to pull off some (partially) raw (mainly) vegan action ASAP. Especially now that I’m noticing problems when eating wheat…

Alexa Chung’s Cat Eye – Makes me and my makeup seem extremely trendy 😉

I’m loving this new blog I discovered today! Hip and trendy outfits that make me super jealous!

Please someone, make this for me!

Oh and I can’t get enough of Peanut Butter Lindor Kugeln. Been eating them nightly since the New Year… too bad I can’t buy them here, in Zurich, in Switzerland, where they originally come from! I’ve even been to the factory and everything…

What I ate Wednesday: Coconut Pancakes!

My day started with some coconut flour pancakes. I’ve been dreaming of pancakes ever since I made Greek Yoghurt pancakes based off of the recipe found on the link on Sunday for dinner. They were perfect and enough to fulfil any pancake fantasy (recipe coming soon), but today I wanted to make them slightly more “healthily”.

IMG_1232

Hence, the coconut flour.

IMG_1233I pretty much followed this recipe to a T. The pancakes looked so amazing in the pictures that I could not resist whipping them up myself. The recipe made enough for two hungry people, and I had plenty left over.

IMG_1237

I ate a few with sprouted almond chia butter and maple syrup, and realised I hadn’t let them cook enough. I put them all back into the pan, and they became slightly crumbly like Kaiserschmarn. This gave me the idea to top my second attempt with raspberry jam. Mhhhm 🙂

IMG_1243

After breakfast I took the dogs out for a walk and got ready for the gym. I went for a training session with my dad today, and boy was it tough!

IMG_1253

We trained for an hour and I was relatively famished afterwards. I was planning on meeting my best friend a half hour later, so I popped into this cute place call “not guilty” for a quick bite to eat. I ordered the Inka Salad, which had quinoa, avocado, tomato and cucumber. After ordering I realised they also had tofu, but decided I had eaten enough protein yesterday, so stuck with my order. It was really fresh and delicious!

IMG_1248

IMG_1247

A short while later I sat down to another Matcha Green Tea Latte with soya milk. I was really craving something warm and sweet after walking around town in red 7/8 pants (I thought it was warm) and All Stars.

Tonight I’ll be going out for dinner with the Iranian girlfriends. I haven’t seen them in ages and can’t wait to catch up with them! I just checked out the menu of the Italian restaurant and will probably be going for something like risotto and vegetables. I’m trying to avoid wheat as much as possible because I’ve been noticing terrible stomach pain whenever I eat bread etc, so no pasta for me tonight! :/

How were your Wednesday food choices?
