TOP 13 POSTS OF 2013

It’s the last Tuesday of 2013. This past year has gone by so quickly, and so much has happened in this short period of time. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all of my readers for supporting me and my blog. I really appreciate that there is SOMEONE out there reading this little bit of pink and sparkly web space 🙂

This post is a summary of all of your favourite blog posts. I was quite happy to see a mixture of all the things I enjoy writing about 🙂 My readers and I seem to have a lot in common, which is what writing and following a blog is all about! So here it is, the top 13 posts of 2013:

You all loved my very first manicure Monday post. I loved that one too – it was one of my closest friend’s wedding and the theme of “what nail polish would a bride wear” was great inspiration for a first blog post.

A close second was my post about Jazz Dance. It was a fun post to write as I looked back to what I expected Jazz dance to be like and compared it to the real thing – keyword: JAZZ HANDS

I was really excited about seeing this post among the top three. This was one of my favourite pre-dance snacks and I’m happy you guys liked it as much as I did! Let’s give a round of applause for cookie-dough oats everybody! 🙂

You guys were also very interested in reading about my life in New York, despite the frequency of my posts slowly decreasing. I wrote here about how college life, at the beginning, took a massive toll on my writing and time-management capabilities, and how I was coping by frequently using face masks to relax 🙂

You guys didn’t just want to know about New York though. Zurich was luckily also a point of interest, especially when I wrote about one of our bigger outdoor parties here, the Zürifäscht.

Yet another post about SARAH LAWRENCE COLLEGE among the top 13! I’m glad you enjoyed reading about it more than I enjoyed actually living it 😉 Here I also highlighted some of my favourite mascaras, which I also mentioned here!

I was very pleased to see two more dance posts among the reader’s favourites. I really hope to spend more time writing about dance in the New Year, as my writing has become slightly more concentrated on beauty products lately. How about making “more dance” a New Year’s resolution, eh? 🙂 I definitely want to expand on my “Funky Friday” posts!

This post was a great experience. I started going back to Ballet, and was discovered by a really nice fellow dance blogger who suggested doing a link-up about “what’s in our ballet bags”. Wonderful!

This is one of my favourite breakfast smoothies. Despite its name, it’s also super healthy!

Yaaaaay you guys also liked learning some Swiss German! I guess I must also resolve to write a few more of these, huh 😉

Oh, and funny enough, you also seemed to enjoy my attempt to attract more men to my pink and sparkly blog. I wonder what the gender distribution on this post was like 🙂

Top post number 13 was when I wrote about my yoga experience.

Seeing all the posts you enjoyed, I feel much more reassured about the mix of topics I include on this blog. Sure, my blog was originally going to be about dance and makeup, but then life got in the way, and this blog became a great outlet to talk about things beyond pirouettes and lip gloss. Especially now that I am more interested in finding out about how muscles work and how to push my fitness to the next level, I haven’t been attending as many dance classes anymore. I do however plan on getting back into dance, now that I am back in Zurich, and look forward to seeing how better fitness might influence my dancing. Also, I hope to become more vegan in 2014, and would really like to share that experience with you guys!

Thank you again for all your love and support!

Favourite Products of 2013

2013 is nearly over. It’s been an interesting year, full of new beauty finds, interesting experiences and finding time to understand more about me, myself and I. To end the year, I thought I would highlight some of my favourite and most-used beauty purchases of the year. Let’s see if 2014 can top them (I’m sure I’ll be spending enough time in stores looking for better 😉 )!

IMG_1092

Holding the prestigious number 1 position is the GIVENCHY PHENOMEN EYES mascara.
IMG_1094It’s an amazing product and the only one I’ve found to date that really gives me the “fake lash effect” (I must confess that I use more than just this mascara, but more about that later 😉 )

IMG_1054Spot number 2 goes to the BRAZIL NUT BODY MIST by the Body Shop.

IMG_1097It leaves me smelling like caramel, which leaves me happy with every spritz. Also, it is not very expensive (unlike other delicious perfumes), so you don’t feel guilty when applying it liberally, frequently 🙂

Number 3 this year is this ORIGINS Charcoal MaskIMG_1102This was an impulse buy and I immediately went back to Sephora to purchase a second. The mask works wonders to my skin!

IMG_0866Ready for number 4?

IMG_1108The Body Shop’s Vanilla Shimmer Body Lotion has been a favourite for many years now, and it has not once disappointed me. It leaves a soft, lightly-lingering vanilla scent, which pairs well with the Brazil Nut Mist mentioned above. More importantly however, my skin is covered in glitter after using it. WIN/WIN 🙂

For number 5 I chose SEPHORA SCENTED NAIL POLISHIMG_1111The colour is a beautiful, barbie, bubblegum pink and stayed scratch free for much longer than most of my other polishes. This could very much have something to do with the fact that it is SCENTED and smells like STRAWBERRIES! 🙂 I also own the shade “Grapefruit”

Number 6IMG_1109

and also number 7 actually

IMG_1110I love the GUERLAIN Meteorites Perles Illuminating Powder for the reasons stated here and many many more. This paired with the oh so soft BRUSH that I bought at the Body Shop leaves me excited to apply, and let alone wear, makeup every day!

IMG_1093

Onwards to the next product!IMG_1100Number 8 is another oldie but goodie. CLARINS Gel Contour des Yeux has been part of my morning routine for a while now, and I’m not planning on betraying it any time soon 🙂 It definitely leaves my eyes feeling “de-puffed” in the morning, lending me the “fresh and awake” look I am constantly striving for.

It works even better when paired with number 9 CLARINS Wake Up Booster

IMG_1096It’s name says it all.

Number 10 is the newest addition to my makeup repertoire

IMG_1095This SMASHBOX BROWTECH TO GO was a bit of an impulse buy at Sephora in Paris, where I was suckered into believing making my eyebrows darker was easier and less time-consuming than plucking them every few days.. hmm interesting theory. Needless to say, I use the “wax” part of it much more now than the “pencil” part. I learned my “brow-drawing lesson” the hard way (super dark eyebrows.. scary times)… but it’s still a great, all-round product!

With all this mascara I’ve been wearing lately, number 11 has become even more important than usual.

IMG_1106

I decided to try the Body Shop’s CAMOMILE Waterproof Makeup Remover after reading about their more “gentle” line. I’ve always found eye makeup removers to be very irritating (also extremely natural ones, like the one by LUSH!) and wasn’t expecting this one to be any better, but was positively astonished by the results!

Number 12 is what I put on after a long night, or after removing really tricky, waterproof eye makeup.

IMG_1104It’s another oldie but goodie, but I haven’t researched a possible replacement enough yet to give up the BOBBY BROWN HYDRATING EYE CREAMI must admit, it does sting slightly when applying it after removing tough makeup, but other than that it definitely helps me look fresher the morning after a party night!

When I don’t have much eye makeup to remove, I stick with number 13: FRESH SOY FACE CLEANSER

IMG_1107It gets the job done. I’ve only been using this interchangeably with my other products for a short while now, but so far I’m preferring this one to my usual suspects..I also love other products by FRESH and hope to try more some day!

Number 14 is another evening product

IMG_1103

Pantene Pro V Intensive Night Spray Care is great on days where you didn’t have time to deeply condition your hair. Simply spray a bit into your mane before going to bed, and you wake up with a head of soft, luscious hair!

Lancome Teint Miracle holds place 15. I’ve been using this for over 2 years now, and have not found any other colour that really matches my complexion.

IMG_1098

I’m thinking about trying out their Teint Idole Ultra 24 h next, as this bottle is nearly empty and I sometimes want a bit more cover than this gives.

Number 16 absolutely had to be this face mask.

IMG_1101

KIEHL’S RARE EARTH DEEP POR CLEANSING MASQUE won my heart the second I tested it. It cools my skin and clears it perfectly enough, so that I don’t feel a need to pick around at the “barely there pores” on my nose.

And finally, number 17 and 18. Both are used more when I go out to parties and want to highlight aspects of my face, or just feel the need to shine a bit more than usual 😉

IMG_1099The Body Shop’s SPARKLER  is used primarily to glitz up my hair and décolleté, and BENEFIT’S HIGH BEAM is painted onto my cheekbones when I wish to highlight the contours of my face, or don’t feel like using a powder blush.

IMG_1105

And there you have it. My top picks for the year 2013. Some have been in use for more than just this year, others only made the cut a few weeks ago, but all in all, I love each and every one of these products, as they enhance each other perfectly and help me take the utmost care of myself, whether by cleansing my face properly or by making me happy, simply by enjoying the scent.

It’s been a good year. I’ve really learned what works for my skin and where I still need to work a little more on figuring out the know-how. 🙂

Earl Grey Oats Variation

Oatmeal.

IMG_1088Definitely a favourite food. It’s fast and easy to prepare, requires only one pot and is more or less fool-proof (just always keep an eye on the boiling milk!)

IMG_1091Nut Butter. Also a favourite. No wonder I always pair the two.

IMG_1090Cashew nut butter. The absolute favourite of them all. I’ve written about adding it into my oatmeal more than enough times to prove that it is a delicious combination.

IMG_1088

To keep things interesting, I subbed millet flakes for the rolled oats. If I dare say so myself, I believe the Earl Grey Tea + Cashew Nut Butter combo is even more scrumptious this way. 🙂

You can find the recipe here, just swap millet flakes for the oats.

Manicure Monday: FEATHERS

IMG_1086Feathers. Very “I believe I can fly” or “Gone with the Wind”.. or, well, actually they are just feathers. Painted on to my nails. Wings not included.

IMG_1087This is yet another Nails Inc. special effect polish that I picked up while roaming the aisles of Sephora in Manhattan. I chose to wear it without a solid colour underneath, and the feathers definitely stuck out more that way.

IMG_1082A quick top coat and my nails were ready to dazzle… but I wasn’t too impressed. The manicure I was left with looked like that of a primary school child’s. Not too stylish, sadly. Next time I will pair it with a base colour and see if it is more pleasing.

Oh well, you can’t have it all!

I think I’m officially a walking Dough Ball

Ahhhh Christmas. It’s a glorious time of year. People are in a good mood, the streets turn in to magical wonderlands and there is plenty of festive food to feast on.

IMG_1041

And plenty can easily be replaced by oodles of, heaps of, or a cornucopia of food!

IMG_1045

Persian Rice

Persian Rice

Enter: the feeling of being a “dough ball”

IMG_1050

I’m generally someone who thrives on eating loads and loads of fruits and vegetables. In keeping with the “big words” used above, you could say I eat a plethora of them. Practicing control with healthy foods like those was never necessary and thus, I have no self-control when it comes to anything I like…

IMG_1044

I just eat, drink and be merry… and let me tell you it really gets to you when you start on the 21st..

IMG_1074

But complaints are better the morning after 😉 Let’s relish the deliciousness of this holiday and recap how I celebrated this year – my first Christmas officially not a teenager!

On the 24th my mom and I celebrated with family friends. We’ve spent the last three Christmases there and it’s starting to become a real tradition.

IMG_1036

I went for a glamour/chic look of a pale pink lacy dress, leopard print shoes, pink blazer…

IMG_1040

..and lots and lots of mascara!

IMG_1037We ate a wide variety of rice, salad, lentils, sweet potato and much much more! I also made peanut butter truffles and a raspberry frozen treat, but was incapable of remembering to take pictures… they were great though!

IMG_1039

I also finally enjoyed some pink champagne! 🙂

On the 25th we celebrated with my dad.

IMG_1051Leopard print shoes were a theme this Christmas… once open-toed and once just plateaued.

IMG_1042Check out his red slippers! 😀

IMG_1054..mascara was also a theme.. and so was loads and loads of food 😉

IMG_1048

On the 26th we went to visit my family in Vienna

IMG_1070

We enjoyed a lot of Viennese treats..

IMG_1065Like this Kaiserschmarn 🙂

IMG_1062

We also enjoyed a lot from afar 🙂

IMG_1067

IMG_1071

Vienna is a really beautiful city. I hope to visit it again soon! It reminds me a lot of Paris, with its majestic charm and royal flair.. I seem to have a thing for the romantic, magical ambiance 🙂

IMG_1059

IMG_1058

IMG_1066

IMG_1064Now that I’m back in Zurich, I need to go through a major detox to start feeling hunger again though, and feel less like a dough ball 😉

But of course, I had to have one more Swiss chocolate while enjoying a spectacular view during the flight back.

IMG_1076

IMG_1075Oh well, tomorrow is another day 😉

Body Pump!

Merry Christmas everyone!

20131224-113112.jpg

I wish you all happy holidays full of love, friends and family, delicious food and the odd, beautiful presents! I just kicked my butt in my very first body pump class (recap coming soon) and am now totally prepared for a massive feast later today 😉

See you after Christmas!
