Girls day Bronxville

This is sort of going to be a Manicure Monday/what I did on a Friday/favourite food post
1469812_10151834753795983_106676067_nWe spent an afternoon in Bronxville last week to do our nails and get a kick of caffeine in our system. I tried a Peppermint Mocha for the first time and also had a sip of a Salted Caramel Macchiato. I was definitely hyper after my little coffee break.

Coffee Date

Before we enjoyed coffee, the three of us got our nails done.

IMG_0686We all went for OPI. 🙂

IMG_0687I chose a shade from the Miss Universe collection called It’s my Year. This name doesn’t just apply to winning the competition, but also to my new look on life. A double meaning, and a beautiful polish to match? I’d call that a win/win.

I am still very much in love with this colour. Depending on where the light hits it, it sparkles with a golden shimmer. It’s a beautiful purple for the holiday season 🙂

Photo on 21-11-13 at 22.18 #2And getting my nails done instead of doing them myself made them last super long!

IMG_0690Coffee and nails – check!

Later that night I enjoyed some sushi:

IMG_0615Sweet potato and avocado sushi to be exact!

IMG_0616The restaurant – Haiku – is one of the best for sushi. The content to rice ratio is larger than at most places, so you get more of the good stuff for a reasonable price! Sushi in the States is so much cheaper than in Switzerland, so of course I frequent this restaurant on a regular basis.

IMG_0709 IMG_0713I’ve also tried their vegetables. I’m a huge fan!

Super Smoothie

IMG_0461I unpacked my food processor yesterday. Ever since, things have been well… processing

IMG_0447I’ve been wanting to have a protein smoothie here for a while. I’ve missed my breakfasts at home…

IMG_0454I used dark chocolate hemp protein from Manitoba Harvest and added a Chobani Blueberry Power Flip to it, for the dreaminess of the yoghurt and the hemp, chia, walnut topping.

IMG_0446It was good, but not as amazing as what I made back home. A sign I’m missing home? Definitely…

IMG_0461One good thing about this smoothie was the actual processor. I’ve never had one that you can just turn on and it starts to churn by itself without needing to stand there and push a button. Loved it! I was able to do other things like wash dishes, clean up my room, and make tea, all while breakfast was being made! 🙂

  • 1 cup frozen strawberries
  • 1/2 frozen banana
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1 serving Dark Chocolate Protein Powder
  • 2 tablespoons ground Flaxseeds
  • a little bit of your milk of choice
  • the yoghurt part of a Chobani Flip

  1. place all the ingredients in a blender/processor and process until done
  2. top with crunch part of Flip
  3. Enjoy!

Mhmmmmm 🙂

Therapy for the Conceal-a-holic

As you could expect, healthy recipes have been on my mind lately. Due to lack of time however, I know it isn’t realistic for me to spend a lot of time meal-planning, shopping and cooking. I know myself too well, and I know that once I get to a Whole Foods, or any health food store, I generally want to meander about and look for the next best thing, so I avoid it and bookmark everything I plan to make over Christmas 😉

Like this Pumpkin Pie Milkshake

I’ve also been hoping to try these Fudgy Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Brownies

Oh and I have an ever-growing wish list, like this Lush Facemask

Or anything from the Marc Jacobs Beauty Collection I’m especially in Love with his nail polish Le Charme, or Oui, and adore the eyeliner.. and everything else!!

Givenchy has done it again..this mascara has been tried and tested in mini. Shall I just purchase an early Christmas present for myself and ask my family for love and gluten-free food instead?

My, oh my, being much more into sports means I want the fashionable territory.. Lulu Lemon anyone?

Forever 21, forever my fav be continued 😉

Fudge Oatmeal

Steel-cut oats, oh why don’t you soften overnight?! Probably because it’s winter and they are telling me to eat them in a massive, hot, steaming bowl before dance instead!

This is exactly what happened with this bowl when my plans went rogue. I wanted to eat my oats during my Dance History class after Contemporary and before the gym, but my tummy was expecting a proper breakfast that morning instead.

So, I cast my conference book on the Cockney school aside and ran to the kitchen to heat up the oats I had prepared a few nights earlier. I also decided to go a little crazy and add some banana, which reminded me of the Oatmeal Artist and how she uses banana in chocolate flavoured oatmeal to add fudge-like flavour; and voilà, an oatmeal star is born!

IMG_0430I was extremely pleased with the flavour and dreamy creaminess. Steel-cut oats are definitely more fun to use than regular rolled oats!

Pre-dance Fudge Oatmeal

  • 1/2 cup steel-cut oats
  • up to 1 cup of chocolate almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons of Decadent Blend: Chia and Flaxseed with cocoa and coconut
  • 1/3 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 banana

  1. Place milk in a pot and bring to a simmer
  2. add in oats
  3. add in the rest of the ingredients
  4. stir and cook until banana has melted into the oats
  5. serve and enjoy!

Sometimes life gets in the way of things you normally set out to do. Take today for example: I really wanted to finally do my laundry, and yet again the dryers weren’t working, or were already being used.Photo on 21-11-13 at 22.49This is the second time this has happened to me in the past 3 weeks. Last time, I decided to pass on drying my clothes, but ended up with muggy-smelling, weirdly-wrinkled shirts. This time, I decided to set up camp outside the laundry room while my clothes were washing, and pounced at the next open dryer. (Which just happened now at 22:56!!) whoop whoop

Other ways life gets to you: wanting to lose weight and follow a clean eating diet, but then you go to college…

1461401_692531120759428_746341384_nAnd it’s someone’s birthday..and you decide to get them a cannoli cake..

And four girls manage to finish the cake within a matter of seconds… ugh. 1385721_692535644092309_442116663_n

I guess I needed it though.. I’ve been trying so hard to be healthy and eat well, but fell into the cliché of trying out diet fads like the raw food/vegan diet, the Dukan diet and many, many more. None of them worked over a longer period of time, hence the cake-necessity as depicted above. Binge-eating, ahoy!

Currently however, I have not only grown tired of diets, but also of junk food. I’ve hit the 2.5 month bench mark of college, and already cannot stand their chocolate chip cookies or their sweet potato fries. I don’t want their pasta, but crave a massive bowl of rice from time to time (oh how Iranian of me). Also, I’ve grown weary of the processed protein bars I’ve been eating to attempt any way of portion control or to satisfy my sweet tooth (Also a very Iranian thing: never knowing when too much fruit is too much; or does that just run in my family?!)

So what do you do when the much-dreaded “Freshman Fifteen” begin to show, but you know you need to eat somehow. Well.. I decided to let my inner health nut out to frolic and play and will elaborate on my quest to eat healthily and be happy and healthy at college in yet another sub-category on this blog: The Discoveries of a Nutritionist’s Daughter!

I’ve also started to become more and more interested in how muscles work and have started going to the gym and yoga frequently, while also trying to listen to my body i.e. if my legs and joints hurt because running on the treadmill is not as good as I thought it was for my body, I will adjust my time at the gym accordingly. I’m also focusing a lot on strength training to build muscle. Muscle is also made in the kitchen don’t forget! 🙂

IMG_0416I’ve learned to plan out “me time”. It might mean I socialise less, but that makes each meal with friends, each girls night out and each Froyo date even more savorable and enjoyable! I’ve begun to go to bed early and get up at 6 am because I know I will get more studying done early morning than late at night when I end up doing things I forgot to do during the day (like laundry). I’ve also learned when I have time to study and when I know I won’t be able to concentrate and decide to use that time to see friends or go to the gym or even just sit outside in the sun while reading up on the news or my favourite blogs!

Coffee Date

Coffee Date

This is my second week trying to focus on myself, and while I only have 4 more weeks until all my papers are due, it’s never too late to take time for yourself and put yourself first. When you are happy and not stressed, the whole world around you will begin to look different and more positive! I’ve definitely noticed a mood switch after extinguishing negative people from my life and changing bad habits!

Also, the occasional retail therapy helps… especially when you end up purchasing Peanut Butter.

994633_10151990951215731_1948602882_nWhen I don’t have enough time to really concentrate on myself, a spoonful of this magical goodness does the trick for a quick pick-me-up 😉

So stay tuned as I rediscover life, health and college. I’m excited 😉

Yoga – completed

Maya wanted to help me channel this discipline into productive energy to teach me how to learn to be patient with my body, which – once being a dedicated ballerina herself – she knew a dancer is never taught to do. After noticing an increasing frustration due to not having any patience in yoga, I considered learning how to be patient may be helpful in my future.

I began to take the class more frequently, mainly because it was the only hobby I was practicing that took place five minutes away from home, and thus easy to attend during a hectic school week. Every Tuesday at 6, I rolled out my mat, my mom next to me, bracing myself for the class, and proceeded to do this for the next 5 years (sometimes with and sometimes without my mom). Class began 10 minutes before 6, lying back on the cushion with the belt around our hips and heels to help elongate and open up our joints in Supta Baddha Konasana. We then continued into either Adohmukha or into leg stretches beginning with Supta Padangusthasana. I learned quickly that it was pointless to force a stretch – it takes time to achieve perfection. This enlightened realization may or may not have included a nearly torn thigh muscle after pushing myself into the splits (which I am still trying to recover from today, after aggravating it doing too many treadmill runs!!)

In the very first class, I learned I was doing Setu Bandha Sarvangasana all wrong. What looked like a simple pelvic raise was more than I initially thought. I was only using my abdominals and not able to relax any of the muscles that weren’t meant to be used in this exercise. Every single time Maya checked up on my alignment, she corrected me until I finally got it right. I had to learn to open up my chest and expand my rip cage more, while letting go of my abs and turning my inside thigh muscles outwards.

It also took me three years to fully understand how to do Adohmukha. I realized I had to try to stretch my calves to get my heels on the ground, but not by pushing my legs down. I had to activate my thigh muscles that then extended past my knees to my calves. Activating my shoulders to extend my back helped increase flexibility in my hips, also helping me get my heels on the floor. Little changes like those made big differences.

Same realization with the twists; I was always either sitting with my back leaning too far back or too far forward, not in my center, which could only be changed by adjusting my pelvic alignment. It took me another year to understand the concept of leg muscle rotation, especially in Prasarita Padottanasana. I never fully got how to rotate my inner muscles out and my outer muscles in, but as soon as I did, my back automatically lowered a few inches, making me – and my teacher – very proud.

It took me a long time to learn to observe yoga as a way of connecting various parts and muscles of my body to achieve an improvement in another one. As Vasili told me in my very first class, it was an absolute help in my dance training as I learned to accept my body for what it is and not for what I want to force it to be. It is making me become more patient and lenient with myself, which I now see has helped make improvements in not only my stretches and exercises, but also in my self-perception and funny enough academics; things don’t always require force and big changes to be achieved, sometimes small adjustments over time can be equally powerful.

Manicure Friday and a Winter Formal

I don’t even know where to start anymore.. It has been way too long.

So let’s start with a much-anticipated nails post!

Specifically: Grapefruit scented nails!!

I didn’t ever think scented nail polish existed until I cam across this magnificent polish by Sephora a few weeks ago. I thought the colour would be a perfect match for the upcoming Winter Formal a few Friday’s ago.

IMG_0402The scent wasn’t quite as strong as the strawberry one, but the colour was just as beautiful and easy to apply!

IMG_0412Plus it matched my dress to the T

1460089_10153517142425245_1203957558_nAnd the bottom of my shoes for that matter 😉

Speaking of Formal..

1459872_10153490059090245_1615466293_nI adore these people! There are a few key favourites missing, but I was happy to get at least some of us all together on a professional picture!

555951_10153489184365245_2004302384_nAnd these two princesses make sure every moment is the time of my life!

1393021_547780268630832_1456560023_nAn extremely delayed, much-needed photo-blast! 🙂
